Keeping The Holiday Spirit In Your Heart

We've reached another holiday season, when we get together with family and friends to celebrate a time of love and generosity. Too often, though, the holidays go hand and hand with the hustle and bustle of buying too-expensive gifts for too many people, and the responsibility of cooking meals that make your table groan under the weight.

The stress of the season can result in a diminishing holiday spirit. Ironically, keeping the holiday spirit of joy and goodwill is the reason we buy all those presents and cook those lavish dinners in the first place, isn't it?

So how can you maintain your happy spirits during holiday time, as you go about the typical tasks of celebrating these special days?

1) Remember to take time each day just for yourself. Whether you treat yourself to a bubble bath with a good book, a walk in the park, or an afternoon nap, make sure to spend some time in relaxation. You deserve it—and it will result in more peaceful holiday times.

2) Buying gifts because you think you "have to" can bring on an empty wallet or a tapped-out credit card. Ignore those commercials that insist you need to buy, buy, buy—purchase gifts only for the true joy of giving, and not because it's expected of you.

3) Take a break from the holiday feast preparations and let another family member volunteer to do it. You can order a holiday meal from a local restaurant or grocer to save you hours of labor, too.

4) Keep in mind that you are free to choose your level of participation in the holiday season. If your schedule is particularly busy this time of year, you might want to streamline your holiday party engagements, attending only a couple instead of your usual ten, for example.

5) You've heard this before—make your gifts! Use your special talents in making unique gifts for your loved ones—they will appreciate the effort that went into them. Using your creativity may save you some money as well.

6) Don't forget that your family and friends are equally busy during the holiday season. If you voice the idea, they might agree to a gift exchange, where each person receives only one gift—saving lots of time and money, too.

7) Last but never least, be sure to treat your relatives and other loved ones with courtesy and kindness this holiday season. The holidays are not the time to stir up old fights or start new ones! By keeping your own attitude pleasant and cheerful, you can be a key factor in making sure this holiday season will be a joyous one for all of your family and friends.
