Peace On Earth

They call him the Prince of Peace. This December, millions of people around the world will be celebrating the birth of Jesus as part of the Christian tradition.

And yet, almost predictably, we find ourselves so very far away from the ideal taught by Jesus and other prophets throughout millennia, as paraphrased by the hippies circa 1968: "Make love, not war."

We've now reached the 21st century, a time of remarkable technologies and scientific advancement. If truth were told, we haven't yet reached a comparable development in our spiritual growth. Instead of decrying war and its destruction, many of us living in the global village exclaim that war is "necessary," or even "inevitable." The drumbeat for killing goes on, hypnotizing forces to take up arms to obliterate a people in order to "save" them.

We may have to ask ourselves if the old French saying is true: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Although we know intellectually that war doesn't solve our deep-seated challenges, sadly, humanity remains warlike at heart. Our choices, one may argue, simply reflect our desires - and so we choose to fight people in other countries (who are more like us than we prefer to believe), again and again, with the same, devastating results.

This holiday season, as you enjoy the comfort of your warm home, tasty meals, and the company of friends and family, send a prayer out into the universe for peace on earth, good will to men. The Prince of Peace probably would encourage you to do no less, and hope that you would do far more.
