The election is over. Well, not really. They're still doing recounts in Ohio because in several polling locations, there were some rather strange irregularities: Bush getting an extra 4200+ votes-- in a county that had less than 700 registered voters, for example. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it would seem to me that the law of statistics would suggest that if this was random problems with voting booths/machines/scanners, that in at least SOME of the instances, Mr. Kerry would have been the one to benefit from the problem. But it doesn't seem to have worked that way. So far, all I've heard about is too many votes for Bush. Another interesting thing to note is that in states where voting methods left a paper trail, exit polls accurately predicted the winners. But in states that used methods with no paper trail (and therefore no recount possible), exit polls were off and Bush seemed to gain about five percentage points, giving him the lead and therefore the electoral votes. (Now might be a good time to interject that Diebold, supplier of voting machines the country over, sent around an internal memo about how they had to essentially guarantee a Bush win. That's not to suggest that Diebold did anything wrong in Ohio or anywhere for that matter. I don't even know if Ohio used Diebold machines. Still, it's worth keeping in mind.)But whether or not Bush is sworn in or not, it has become crystal clear that the agenda of the radical religious right is right on track. Their gloating can be heard everywhere, from the airwaves of CBN to Rush Limbaugh. They're talking about the "mandate" they believe Bush recieved when he got more votes for an incumbent president than anyone else. But what they don't tell you is that he also got more votes AGAINST him than anyone since Wilson beat Dewey in 1916. These people have to get a realistic working definition of "mandate". I suggest this simple comparison. The Boston Red Sox did not get a "mandate" in their series with the Yankees. They DID get a "mandate" in their series with the Cardinals. See the difference? The only problem is that not only did the Democrats fail to gain any seats in the Senate, they actually lost some. And now there's virtually no way that the Democrats can stop the Republicans from passing whatever legislation they choose.
And one of the first bills that they're going to try to get a vote on is called the National Marriage Law. It was introduced by Rep. Ernest Istook and has 37 co-sponsors already. The intent of the law is to create a national law that would override any state law that permits gay marriage by defining marriage nationwide as a legal contract only between one woman and one man. Unlike the Federal Marriage Amendment, this law would need only a simple majority to pass both the House and the Senate. No state need approve it. When Bush signed it (and he most certainly would), it would make null and void the laws in Massachusettes that allow gay marriage. But even more frightening is the second part of the law: the ONLY court that would have jurisdiction to decide challenges to this law would be the US Supreme Court. On July 22, 2004, the House already passed a bill that prevents federal courts, including the Supreme Court, from reviewing the Defense of Marriage Act. Essentially, what the House has done is attempt to get rid of the checks and balances of our governmental system.
Here's how those checks and balances work. Congress writes the laws. The President either approves or vetoes them, thus keeping a check on Congress. The courts determine the constitutionality of a law and if it is unconstitutional, they throw it out, no matter how many people support the law. That is their job-- and for doing their job, they are scornfully called "activists" (although I have no idea when that became a "dirty word".) By ruling on the Constitutionality, the courts keep both Congress AND the president in check. Conversely, the president appoints many members of the courts, and Congress must approve. So again, congress keeps check on the president and both keep check on the judges through the appointment process. Federal judges can also be impeached (as can members of Congress and the president). This too is one of the checks on the system. But now, Congress has decided that it can determine what is constitutional or not and whether or not the courts can weigh in on the issue. This law is itself unconstitutional and I doubt that it will stand long. Or I should say, I doubted it would stand long. Who knows how long it might stand now that the religious reich is in control.
Make no mistake about it. The RRR (like the KKK before them) believes that this nation is meant to be and was designed to be a Christian nation. They point to the colonists at Plymouth Rock and they say that there is no doubt as to why they came to these shores. What they don't tell you is that those same colonists had NO plans to create a new nation. They were intent to remain a part of England forever. The founding fathers, however, had a different idea. They wanted a free nation-- and they wanted to guarantee every human the right to live his or her life according to his or her own beliefs. People like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts and the likes will stop at almost nothing to fulfill their agenda of making this a Christian nation. In September, Jimmy Swaggart vowed, in a televised sermon, to kill any gay man that looked at him wrong-- to the cheers, applause and laughter of his followers. While Swaggart claims that his remark was just a southern euphamism, just let someone slam a Christian and see how fast they're screaming "Discrimination!"
So in order to fully expose the agenda of the radical religious right, I am creating a new section on my homepage entitled "Exposed! Unmasking the Agenda of the Radical Religious Right: Dismantling the Constitution of the United States of America." I have, to this point in time, created pages on the leaders of these anti-American forces. I'm now working on pages about the politicians they have in their pockets. Then I'll turn to their organizations and show you how these groups are making hundreds of millions of dollars every year-- religion is big business nowadays. I ask you to please be patient as I get these pages up. I'm working on them as much as I can and getting them up as fast as possible. You can view what I have so far at Exposed!. (Clicking on this will open the pages in a new window. If you get to a page that doesn't seem to fit, check back in a day or two. I'm trying to maintain some consistency, which means I often copy and paste entire pages and then change links. And sometimes life intervenes and it's a couple days before I can fix the links.) I hope you take the time to read the information presented and to educate yourself as to what is happening to this great nation as it struggles to break free of the death grip of the RRR.
